China
Initiatives
Roosevelt University President Chuck Middleton, College of Arts and Sciences Dean Lynn Weiner and Assistant Provost for Asian Programs Pauline Wang
visited China in November 2005.
They worked with representatives of Shenyang University, Shijiazhuang Posts and Telecommunications Technical College, and Beijing Institute of Technology
to develop innovative relationships so that students and faculty can exchange ideas and learn from one another.
Here are the initiatives being discussed in early 2006:
Roosevelt University and Shenyang University
Visiting Scholars Program
- Starting in spring semester of 2006, Shenyang University will send up to 10 faculty members from its various colleges and fields to Roosevelt University
for either one year or six months as part of Roosevelt’s visiting scholars program.
- They will learn how Roosevelt professors teach in their subject areas and will receive a Certificate of International Comparative Studies in recognition
of their efforts.
- The scholars will have at least two years teaching experience, be members of the Shenyang faculty and be proficient in English.
- The Shenyang faculty members can audit Roosevelt courses related to their teaching fields.
Roosevelt University and Shijiazhuang Posts and Telecommunications Technical College
Sister-University Relationship
- Visits between leaders of the two institutions will be organized so that both sides can send delegates to visit each other on a regular basis. This
will encourage exchanges, strengthen communications and promote discussions.
- Both institutions would like to have academic and teaching exchanges. This could include joint seminars and forums.
- A visiting scholars exchange program can be established. Among the programs that would be beneficial to students are computer science and telecommunications,
business management, finance, public administration and the Chinese and English languages.
- Both institutions would like to establish an exchange program for students. The goal is to establish short-term exchanges for visits and study.
- Both Roosevelt and Shijiazhuang Posts have quality resources in each other’s fields. It would be beneficial to share science and technology
materials, journals, periodicals, and scientific and research information.
- Joint undergraduate degree programs can be established in computer science and technology, industry and business management, finance, economics, communications,
the Chinese and English languages and other programs. In addition, master’s programs in business and public administration could be held.
- Both institutions would like to work together to provide on-the-job professional training to the employees of China Post in the fields of information
technology, industry and business management, finance, accounting, and human resources.
Roosevelt University and Beijing Institute of Technology
Letter of Intent to Establish a Cooperative Relationship
- Roosevelt and Beijing Institute will designate officials to lead discussions on a regular basis. The goal is to sign an agreement of cooperation at
the Beijing Institute Campus in April 2006 by President Middleton and President Jiao.
- The agreement will create a joint program that will share real estate expertise between the two institutions and undertake programs that will increase
the knowledge of doing business in both China and the U.S. for students and faculty, particularly related to real estate investment.
- Areas for discussion in the short term could include an exchange of business experts in real estate development and an exchange of faculty members
for four to six weeks in a visiting scholars program.
- Long-term areas of cooperation between the two institutions could include an exchange of students for one-month periods, a joint degree in real estate
with students from each institution spending one semester at the other institution, and creating an Executive MBA with a concentration in real estate
with key real estate courses ranging from two weeks to one month at either institution.
