Bachelor of Musical Arts Degree

The Bachelor of Musical Arts degree is an interdisciplinary program requiring 122 semester hours of course work. The degree is designed for students with strong academic background who wish to combine the study of music with an emphasis in a second field. Students’ programs are individualized according to their interests and culminate in a senior project that melds their work in music with their second discipline. A grade point average of at least 3.0 is required for admission into the program.

Six hours of foreign language are recommended. This may be counted in fulfillment of the humanities requirement or as part of the second emphasis if that is of an interdisciplinary nature.

    African/African-American Studies, art, history, international studies, literature, North American studies, philosophy, psychology, social justice, Sociology, theatre, women’s and gender studies  

Applied music

The numbering for individual lessons and private instruction is the same for undergraduate courses in performance subjects in all departments, both in the major and minor sequences. For a detailed description of individual courses, consult departmental course outlines.

Voice 100: Freshman Performance Class. A supportive forum for first-year voice majors. Development of stage presence through performances for peer audiences and coaching by faculty. Prereq: Voi 211 or concurrent.(0)

Voice 199: Vocal Coaching. Intensive work on assigned repertory, focusing on interpretation, diction, and musical issues. Required of students registered for voice at the major level. Grades of A or B required for subsequent registration. (0)

Voice 200: Sophomore Performance Class. A supportive forum for second-year voice majors. Development of stage presence through performances for peer audience and coaching by faculty. Prereq: Voi 212. (0)

Instrument or Voice 201-204: Minor Study, Intermediate Level. Prereq: Placement or proficiency test. (2)

Instrument or Voice 211-214: Major Study, Lower Division. Development of technical skills and basic repertoire. Prereq: admission to department by performance examination. (3-4)

Voice 250-251: Jury Examination (Freshman). Performance of repertoire for a panel of department faculty. (1)

Jazz Studies Instrument 271-274: Major Study. Development of technical skills and basic repertoire. (2-4)

Instrument or Voice 300: Junior/Senior Performance Class. (0)

Instrument or Voice 301-309: Minor Study, Advanced Level. Prereq: Applied Music 204 or placement or proficiency test. (2)

Instrument or Voice 311-316: Major Study, Upper Division. Study of advanced repertoire. Preparation of public recital. Prereq: grade of A or B in Applied Music 214 or departmental approval. (3-4)

Voice 350-351: Jury Examination (Junior/Senior). Performance of repertoire for a panel of department faculty. (1)

Jazz Studies Instrument 371-374: Major Study. Advanced instruction in jazz repertoire and techniques. Prereq: Applied Music 274. (2-4)
