Women's and Gender Studies Related Events Upcoming Events WGS Graduate Student Social Meet incoming and returning WGS students and mingle with WGS faculty and friends of the program. Recent Events Graduating WGS Master's Presentations and Reception Thursday, May 14th, 3 PM Spertus Lounge AUD 244 Graduating MA students Denise Allen-Blackmon, Tara Gregg, Liam Lair, Andi Michaels, and Heidi Truax presented their Master's Projects and Theses and led a discussion on the significance of their work for the larger women's and gender studies community.

WGS Graduates and Faculty members From left: Tara Gregg, Heidi Truax, Ann Brigham, Marjorie Jolles, Liam Lair Using Difficult Dialogues to Identify Silences, Build Coalitions, and Enact Transformation Friday, April 24th, 4-6PM DePaul University This workshop-based discussion was inspired by Cricket Keating's article "Building Coalitional Consciousness,"(NWSA Journal Vol. 17, No. 2 Summer 2005) and focused on creating dialogue and building coalitions around themes that manifest in Women's and Gender Studies Programs. The event provided the opportunity to identify and discuss some of the "difficult dialogues" that we need to have in WGS and to engage in specific practices that will help us have those discussions. The "Difficult Dialogues" workshop took place as part of a larger conference at DePaul University on April 24-25th, Creating Solidarity across Differences-Building Coalitional Consciousness and Action. This workshop-based discussion was sponsored by The Chicago Area Women's and Gender Studies Consortium. 3rd Annual Feminist & Queer Literature Reading Thursday, April 23rd, 4:30 PM Spertus Lounge AUD 244 This year Peggy Shinner of the MFA faculty was featured, along with other students and faculty readers. Peggy Shinner Regina Buccola Feminist & Queer Comedy Night Thursday, April 2nd, 8-9:30 PM Herman Crown Center Dining Center A great night of feminist & queer comedy, presented by two of Chicago’s own Lincoln Lodge comedians. This event is free, thanks to our student activity fee. Sponsored by RU Proud and FU: Feminists United. Integrating Feminism in the Non-Profit World: Panel Discussion with Local Representatives March 26th, 2009 4:30-6 PM AUD 244 This event featured a panel of professional leaders working in the Chicago area. Participants learned about the role intersections of gender, race, class, and sexuality play in various types of non-profit organizations. Each panelist described their agency and the role feminism plays in their experiences, and a facilitated question and answer session followed. This event will be a great experience for anyone interested in activism, feminism, and non-profits throughout Chicago. Sponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies Program.

Ranging from violence to education and human rights, the panelists shed light on the story of Margaret Garner and emphasized its relevance in today’s discourses. Decibelle Women’s Music and Culture Festival Workshop: Confronting Gender Based Violence September 25th, 2008 4:30PM AUD 320 The 6th annual Decibelle Music and Culture Festival presented by Estrojam partnered with Roosevelt to host one of its workshops during the festival. Focusing on violence against women and the queer community, representatives from two nonprofit organizations, FAIR-Fund and Chicago’s Young Women’s Empowerment Project, and Roosevelt faculty member Kate Webster discussed how their organizations work to create social change for victims of violence and some ways that individuals could support non-violent problem solving strategies in their communities. An Inconvenient Truth: Deconstructing the Hype and Building a Case for Action March 27th, 2008 3:30 PM AUD 528 This event was comprised of a film screening of An Inconvenient Truth followed by a panel discussion, facilitated by WGS MA student Brittany Boswell, on what is and is not addressed in the film and who is most affected by environmental degradation. A panel of RU faculty, including Carrie Brecke (English & Women’s and Gender Studies), Vicky McKinley (Biology), and Kim Ruffin (English) shared their knowledge and perspectives on the film. This event was developed in the WGS 404 Ecofeminism course in the Fall 2007 semester. Delicious tea was provided by ArgoTea. Women, Activism, and the Urban Environment March 12th, 2008 4 PM AUD 320
