WGS Master's Student Tara Gregg Receives Samuel Ostrowsky Award

Graduating WGS student Tara Gregg received the Samuel Ostrowsky Award in recognition of her outstanding work in the humanities. Her work was a feminist analysis of Aaron Sorkin’s The West Wing, specifically how the television show negotiates an American hegemonic feminist narrative and creates an environment for the consideration of feminist politics in relation to discourses of citizenship. She was presented with this award at the Department of Literature and Languages Awards Ceremony, May 15, 2009 in the second floor commons of the Gage Building.

WGS Master's Student Liam Lair Receives Roosevelt University's Outstanding Thesis Award

Graduating WGS student Liam Lair is the recipient of one of two university awards for academic excellence in a Master's thesis. His research focused on disrupting dominant narratives of transgender identity. This award will be presented at Roosevelt University's Research Day, May 7, 2009 in the Congress Lounge, on the second floor of the Auditorium Building. This event is free and open to the public.

WGS Master’s Student Heidi Truax Receives Matthew Freeman Social Justice Award

Graduating WGS student Heidi Truax is one of two winners of this year’s Matthew Freeman Social Justice Award, which is given in recognition of significant achievements in social justice work carried out by a Roosevelt University student. The award recognizes Heidi’s work in the educational service department at Teen Living Program’s Belford House.  Teen Living Program (TLP) offers youth ages 12 to 24 residential care, educational and vocational services as well as tools and support for sustainable living in their future. 

This year’s awards will be presented by University President Chuck Middleton on Thursday, April 23rd, at 11 am in the Sullivan Room, on the second floor of the Auditorium Building.  The award presentations will precede the annual Matthew Freeman Lecture, which will be given by Professor Anne-Marie Cusac, who will be presenting material from her new book, Cruel and Unusual, The Culture of Punishment in America. The event is free and open to the public.
