Certificate in Clinical Child and Family Studies Overview The Certificate in Clinical Child and Family Studies provides students enrolled in Roosevelt University's three clinically-oriented psychology graduate programs with an opportunity to gain special expertise in working with children. This Certificate is sufficiently versatile so that it can be successfully incorporated into the training provided within our MA in Clinical Psychology, MA in Clinical Professional Psychology, or PsyD in Clinical Psychology programs. The Certificate in Clinical Child and Family Studies complements students' general clinical training, so that upon graduation they (a) will have an advanced understanding of normal and abnormal child development, and (b) will be competent practitioners who can effectively assist children and families. Requirements Four courses (12 credit hours) are required to earn a Certificate in Clinical Child and Family Studies. More specifically, students pursuing the Certificate will select from a series of courses currently offered by the Department of Psychology. The Certificate culminates with a clinical placement that involves direct and substantive work with children and families. Students pursuing this Certificate choose three electives from the following list of courses:
Students also complete one clinical placement that primarily focuses on psychological assessment or psychotherapy with children or families. The clinical placement requirement can be satisfied by any of the three-credit courses/training experiences listed below (the specific course which is most appropriate depends on the program in which the student is enrolled). The Director of Clinical Training within the Department of Psychology can advise students whether a particular training site provides sufficient contact with children and families to fulfill this requirement. Courses applied to the CCFS Certificate simultaneously satisfy some the requirements for the MA in Clinical Psychology, MA in Clinical Professional Psychology, or PsyD in Clinical Psychology. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.3 in all of their coursework described above to receive the Certificate. In addition, only three credits of coursework from another university may be applied towards the Certificate. Additional courses may be approved by the Certificate Coordinator (Dr. Steven Meyers) as they are offered.
