Roosevelt University's program in Public Administration provides students with the managerial and technical skills they'll need to work in governmental, health and not-for-profit organizations. With more than 80 current students and more than 2,000 graduates, Roosevelt's Public Administration program is one of the largest in the state. It is designed for both experienced administrators as well as for individuals seeking their first jobs or changing careers. Established in 1964, this multi-disciplinary program combines academic theory with practical skills. Concentrations are offered in Government Management, Health Services Management, and Non-profit Management. Students Public Administration students come from a variety of educational, ethnic and professional backgrounds, creating a cosmopolitan environment for study. Students range from traditional college-age students to older adults returning to their studies after an absence. The average age of Public Administration students is 29 years old. In addition to the
regular MPA program, Roosevelt University offers an Executive Master of
Public Administration program. We are now offering this new program—unique in the Chicago area-- for busy government employees, who are mid-career, to further their education. The EMPA cohort is open only to government administrators with 5 or more years of experience in a responsible policy, administrative, or managerial position. The advantage of a cohort program is that students take the same schedule of courses with others who are at a similar level in their career, facilitating learning, interaction, and the development of relationships. Students attend fewer classes than our regular MPA program, meeting for five and one half hours on each of six Saturdays for each course. Two courses a semester are offered, and students can take one or both courses. The classes are at our beautiful Schaumburg campus near Woodfield Mall with easy access and plenty of free parking. Fields of Concentration Government Management - This concentration focuses on preparing students for careers or career advancement in the public sector. Student take courses in government administration, criminal justice administration, urban policy, and other government management and police courses. Health Services Management - Courses are offered in health management, health economics, health care financial management, health care marketing and planning, health policy, health law, and public health. Nonprofit and Human Services - Regular course offerings include nonprofit administration, management, marketing, philanthropy, fundraising, and foundation management. Certificate programs In addition to the MPA degree, public administration also offers three non-degree certificate programs. 1) Certificate in Nonprofit Management is a three-course sequence (PADM 421, 422 or 423 and 424) for those who wish to develop or strengthen their management and resource development skills. 2) Certificate in Health Services Management is designed to serve the needs of health care professionals who already have a bachelor’s or master’s degree or advanced medical degree and who seek training in the management of health services. Four courses are required for the certificate: PADM 401, 451, and two other health electives. 3) Geographic Information Systems Certificate requires five courses: PADM 435, 416, 494, and two courses approved by your advisor. See the GIS website for full details. Admission Requirements Applicants with an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher are admitted based upon previous academic performance and evaluation of a one- to two-page essay on an assigned topic. Applicants with an undergraduate grade point average below 3.0 will be considered on the basis of the above plus additional supporting materials. These applicants should submit a history of their work and community experience and two letters of reference. They may also submit aptitude test scores such as the GRE or the GMAT. Information regarding admission may be obtained from the office of graduate admission or the department office. Degree Requirements Requirements To earn the MPA degree, students must complete 36 or 39 semester hours of course work depending on students' previous administrative experience. The field internship is required of all students without management experience and all students who are changing career fields; experienced administrators may have this requirement waived. Course work must be completed with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Courses
Three year course schedule policy for public administration. Internships A course requirement for students changing careers, or just entering a career in public administration, is an internship. The internship provides field experience and often leads to a full-time job offer (the requirement may be waived for in-service students). Courses are offered each semester in these programs. To gain admission into the certificate programs, participants must be admitted to the university through the regular admission process.
