Spanish
¡Bienvenidos al Departamento de Español! Spanish is a world language, spoken by a population that is geographically, ethnically and socially diverse. It is also the second most spoken language in the United States. The literatures of the Hispanic world have had a major impact on world literature in the twentieth and twentieth-first century, as has Hispanic film, music and visual arts. In addition, knowledge of Spanish is now indispensable in the professional world. Jobs in hospitality, the medical professions, communications, the arts, business and education—among other fields— increasingly require Spanish proficiency. The critical and creative skills acquired in the study of another language and culture help one appreciate and navigate today’s transnational economies and cultures. Why take Spanish at Roosevelt? Small and lively classes, innovative and interdisciplinary courses, a focus on issues of social justice, a culturally and socially diverse student body, study abroad opportunities, flexible class schedules that accommodate working populations as well as traditional students. Roosevelt’s Spanish program offers training in language acquisition that prepares you for communication in the real world and that can lead to a major or minor in Spanish and further study toward a graduate degree. Advanced courses are oriented toward the literatures and cultures of the Spanish-speaking Americas, and are supplemented by courses on the literature of Spain. Our longstanding relationship with Chicago’s Hispanic community has lead to fruitful social, academic and cultural collaborations.
