Spanish (Master of Arts)
For more information, see MA Requirments The graduate program in Languages leads to a Master of Arts degree in Spanish, and is designed to achieve the following objectives:
In view of these objectives, the program offers courses taught in the following areas: Language Courses Courses in grammar review, composition, and conversation. These courses are designed to increase the student’s ability to speak, understand, read, and write the language fluently. They also provide the student with the necessary knowledge to teach effectively or translate accurately. Taught in Spanish. Literature and Criticism Comprehensive courses in literary movements and periods, as well as intensive courses dealing with writers and genres. Courses are designed to increase students’ analytical and critical interpretation of literature and to provide the necessary background in literary history and theory so that students will be able both to develop ideas and also be able to express these ideas in a clear, precise, organized manner. Taught in Spanish. Courses on Culture and History of Ideas These courses analyze, compare, and contrast components of Hispanic culture. In addition, courses surveying the intellectual history of a region or epoch and examining the major literary works are offered. Admission To apply for admission to the Masters Program, students must submit the following: (1) evidence of language proficiency in Spanish by having completed a minimum of 3 courses at the 300 level or equivalent or by approval of a faculty member in Spanish, (2) a transcript that reflects a 3.0 GPA in Spanish and a 2.5 GPA overall or permission of Spanish faculty, (3) two letters of recommendation from professors or supervisors, (4) a statement of purpose describing the reasons for pursuing an advanced degree in Spanish.
