Spanish (Bachelor of Arts)
Languages offers a variety of courses for students interested in French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Programs in the major lead to the Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. Courses develop the student’s ability to speak, understand, read, and write in the target language. From the beginning level, the target language is used extensively, and students are encouraged to use it in an array of activities and situations. Class exercises, most of which are student centered, are devoted to listening, speaking, writing and reading, in accordance with the goals of the particular class, so that the student can tailor the language to his or her needs in business, travel, teaching, health care, or public administration. Culture is systematically incorporated into all levels of instruction. Intermediate and advanced courses are designed to foster an appreciation of the target literature, as well. Students may also take a minor in Spanish. All courses are designed not only for language majors and minors, but also for students who are specializing in other fields. Requirements for a Major in Spanish Ten courses are required for a major in Spanish—eight beyond the intermediate (200) level. Beginning (100) level courses do not count toward the major. Students who have learned Spanish outside Roosevelt University will be assessed and placed appropriately. Those who have advanced skills may begin immediately at Span 301. Prior to taking more advanced courses, students must take Span 301 Writing in Spanish and Span 302 Introduction to Literary Analysis. It is strongly recommended that students take survey courses, Span 310 Literature and Culture of Latin America before 1888 and Span 311 Literature and Culture of Latin America after 1888. All courses must be approved by an advisor. All courses in the major must be completed with a grade of C or higher. Students who receive credit for transfer courses from other universities must take at least a minimum of four Spanish courses at Roosevelt University. All 200 and 300-level courses are taught in Spanish. Students intending to teach should consult with the College of Education for specific requirements pertaining to certification
