Philosophy Course Descriptions

Philosophy offers a complete undergraduate program in the history and problems of philosophy. Course offerings provide the intensive training necessary for students planning to use a major in philosophy as the core of a general education as well as for those intending to pursue graduate studies upon the completion of a B.A. degree.

Major in Philosophy

The 30 semester hours required for a major in philosophy are as follows: four core courses; two elective courses; three courses in a selected area of concentration; a senior research project. Philosophy majors are also required to take two supporting courses in cultural history. One year of a foreign language is strongly recommended.

Core Courses: One course from PHIL 201 through 206; PHIL 210, PHIL 230, and PHIL 255.

Elective Courses: Any two courses in philosophy.

Area of Concentration: Three courses in one of the following areas.

Social and Political Philosophy: Any three courses from PHIL 313, PHIL 321, PHIL 329, PHIL334, and PHIL 340.

Value Theory: three courses from PHIL 333, PHIL 334, PHIL 340, PHIL 345, and PHIL 346.

Religion and Science: Any three courses from PHIL 219, PHIL 221, PHIL 314, PHIL 331, and PHIL 360.

Senior Research Project: PHIL 399: An independent study project in the student’s area of concentration directed by the concentration advisor or another appropriate faculty member.

Supporting Courses: Two courses from HIST 200 through 203 or other cultural history courses approved by the discipline.

For majors, no course in which the grade is lower than C will be counted toward the major. Transfer students must complete at least 12 semester hours at Roosevelt University, including at least six at the 300 level.
Students majoring in philosophy should check their requirements for graduation with an advisor soon after deciding to major in philosophy. Notification of candidacy for graduation should be given during the advisement period preceding the last semester before graduation.

Minor in Philosophy

The 15 semester hours required for a minor in philosophy must include at least one course on the 300 level. All courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher. Students may choose either a general minor (any 15 hours subject to the above requirements) or one of two subject area minors: Political and Legal Philosophy or Religion and Science. Students who elect one of the subject area minors must take at least 9 of the required 15 hours in that area. (Students interested in a subject area minor should see philosophy advisor for a list of relevant courses.)
