Professional Communications (Bachelor of Arts)

The Professional Communications major is is geared to those who work in business or plan careers in business and want to broadly develop their communication skills.

Students take eight core courses (24 semester hours), along with four elective courses in the major (12 semester hours), all with grades of C or better. Transfer students must complete at least 15 semester hours of these courses at Roosevelt.

This program does not require a professional internship and certain pre-professional courses and is not intended for students who hope to work in media fields such as broadcasting, magazines, newspapers, public relations or advertising.

  • JOUR 240 Communication Research
  • JOUR 243 Visual Communication and Technology
  • BCOM 301 Business Communications
  • SPCH 345 Cross-cultural Communications
  • SPCH 353 Business and Professional Speaking
  • JOUR 389 New Media and Technology

For electives in the major, Professional Communications students may take any non-required courses at the 200 or 300 level in Journalism or Speech.

We also recommend a minor. This generally is 15 to 18 semester hours beyond the Arts and Sciences general education requirements in one department or program, such as English, American Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Economics, History, Political Science, or various humanities.

The degree is a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Communications and a concentration in Professional Communications.
