Journalism (Print and Electronic) - (Bachelor of Arts)
Department of Communication | College of Arts & Sciences

The program prepares students for careers in newspapers, magazines and other forms of publishing, and in broadcast journalism, electronic media and online journalism.

The degree requires coursework in the three major areas of professional media: print, broadcast and online. The Department of Communication offers current equipment, software, classrooms and labs to assure that students’ experience in class is as close as possible to the experience they will encounter on the job. As a “convergence” program, the degree assumes that media fields will continue to evolve and overlap as students pursue their careers – making training across these areas essential for continued success.

The program is a mix of hands-on professional courses and theoretical courses focused on issues inherent in all journalistic fields.

Journalism students complete 33 semester hours in journalism courses with grades of C or higher. Nine courses (27 semester hours) are required, along with two electives (6 semester hours) in the major. Transfer students must complete at least 21 semester hours of these courses at Roosevelt.

Students majoring in Journalism can focus their electives by following one of five concentrations: writing/reporting, magazine, visual media, electronic media, and editing.

Students must complete Journalism 201, Communication in the Information Age, with a C or better to begin the major.

Requirements

For electives in the major, students may take any two non-required courses at the 200 or 300 level, or they can concentrate their electives in these areas:

Writing/Reporting: Jour 322, Feature Writing, or Jour 352, Editorial and Column Writing.

Magazine: Jour 355, Magazine Writing, and Jour 357, Magazine Production.

Visual Media: Jour 325, Photography: From Chemical to Digital, and Jour 361, Advanced Photography (or other advanced photo courses as available)

Electronic media: Jour 344, Promotional Video Production, and Jour 353, Alternative Media.

Editing: Jour 350, Editing, and Jour 352, Editorial and Column Writing.

We also recommend a minor. This generally is 15 to 18 semester hours beyond the Arts and Sciences general education requirements in one department or program, such as English, American Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Economics, History, Political Science, or various humanities.

The degree is a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Journalism.
