Advertising (Bachelor of Arts) The advertising program prepares students for careers in diverse branches of the advertising business, including ad agencies, corporate and institutional marketing or advertising departments, and media providers of advertising services. Students prepare for creative and design work, sales and account executive duties, research, management, and media relations. Six core courses (18 semester hours) and four elective courses (12 semester hours), all with grades of C or better, are required for the major. Transfer students must complete at least 15 semester hours of these courses at Roosevelt. Students must complete Journalism 201, Communication in the Information Age, with a C or better to begin the major. Requirements
For electives in the major, we particularly recommend public relations courses. Other courses in broadcasting and writing/reporting also are appropriate electives. We also recommend at least 3 hours (one course) in persuasion, either Speech 201 persuasive speaking (follows Speech 101) or a substitute approved by the major advisor. We also recommend a minor. This generally is 15 to 18 semester hours beyond the Arts and Sciences general education requirements in one department or program, such as English, American Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Economics, History, Political Science, or various humanities. The degree is Bachelor of Arts with a major in Integrated Communications and concentration in Advertising.
