Graduate Certification Program in Bioinformatics & Computational Biology

Bioinformatics is the field of science in which biology, computer science, and information technology merge into a single discipline. The certificate in bioinformatics is designed to help students/participants develop a comprehensive understanding of informatics approaches to computational biology. The Human Genome Project (HGP) has resulted in an explosion of genetic information, which is increasingly guiding new medical discoveries and techniques. New protein structures are solved every day serving as the basis for advanced drug design. Computer database techniques are advancing to addresses the challenges of analyzing and interpreting huge volumes of biological data. All this has resulted in the relatively young, yet increasingly influential field of bioinformatics with increasing demand for individuals trained in these new ways of thinking and analytical methods. The Roosevelt University Certificate Program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology will help you become a part of this exciting and expanding field.

Five-course certificate is designed for those who want to gain enough knowledge to immediately to meet the rapidly expanding demand for bioinformatics professionals. Though the Roosevelt program is an academic one, obtaining the certificate can be considered strong preparation for the CBS (Certified Bioinformatics Specialist) and CBM (Certified Bioinformatics Master) certifying examinations.

Course Requirements for Certification:

The following four core courses are required:

Molecular Biology

 Biology 453 ( 5 hr)

Database system

    Comp Sci 433 ( 3 hr)

Experimental design

         Math 457 ( 3 hr )

Information Tech For Sciences (Bioinformatics I)

 Biology 461 ( 3 hr)

In addition, one course should be completed from the following two options.

Mathematical Modeling for the Life Sciences

      Biology 440 (3 hr)

Introduction to Genome analysis (Bioinformatics II)

      Biology 463 (3 hr)
