Information Systems M.S. Frequently Asked Questions
MSIS | Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration

1. I am a MBA student and have not completed 4 INFS courses. May I enroll in the INFS 471 (Management of Information Systems) course?

Generally this is approved, but to be sure of your success in INFS 471, you should contact the instructor for permission.

2. MSIS program - managerial or technical orientation?

The MSIS program and INFS courses have a managerial and conceptual focus. The concepts are broad reaching and will provide a solid foundation for your future career. Many courses covering the latest technology, programming languages, and software are available from Roosevelt University's Computer Science department, local junior/community colleges, and employers. While these technical courses are very useful, they do not earn graduate credit in the MSIS program.

3. The courses INFS 421 (Accounting in Information Systems) and INFS 495 (Independent Study in Information Systems) are offered by "By Arrangement". What does "By Arrangement" mean?

"By Arrangement" means that the student must contact me to enroll in the course. The course is not conducted in a classroom setting.

4. How do graduate courses differ from undergraduate courses?

The thrust of a graduate program is continued education--you will learn material in the courses and you will also 'learn how to learn' in the future. This emphasis is demonstrated in the courses when the student is required to read journal articles and write research papers. Sharing knowledge is also a goal. You will write papers, make oral presentations, and engage in class discussions. Generally, the courses in your graduate program are of great interest to you; there are few requirements outside your chosen subject area. In your graduate program, you can expect to read, write, talk, and think about topics of great interest to you.
