$ 1000 GEOGRAPHY TUITION SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE

The Joan Barch Tuition Scholarship is available for students studying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at Roosevelt University. It can be used for tuition only and only used in the fall/spring terms. Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given to full-time students. Undergraduate students or GIS certificate students or Graduate students are eligible to apply.

Selection criteria

Courses taken in Geography or closely related ENVS field

Academic performance of 2.5 or better

Letter of application showing interest and potential to contribute to the study of GIS

Proven interest in geography

Application Procedure

Each application should contain:

  • 1 page letter of application stating why and how this scholarship will help you to prepare and make a career in Geography or environmental science or closely related field including your immediate and future academic and professional objectives
  • An informal transcript that shows a GPA of 2.5 or better
  • One page resume

DEADLINE NOTE
On-line applications for Fall 2006 will open May 1, 2006, with
selections beginning on July 3, 2006. On-line applications for Spring
2007 will open September 1, 2006, with selections beginning October 2,
2006. Applicants may continue to complete and submit applications after
the labs begin making selections for internships; however,
applications submitted after this date may never be read by the
lab.

OBJECTIVES:
This program places students in paid internships in Science and
Engineering at any of several of the sponsor's facilities. Students
work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the
laboratories' research programs. The different laboratories each offer
different research opportunities. Internships are available at the
following labs: Ames Laboratory; Argonne National Laboratory;
Brookhaven National Laboratory; Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory;
Idaho National Laboratory; Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory;
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Los Alamos National
Laboratory; National Renewable Energy Laboratory; Oak Ridge National
Laboratory; Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; Princeton Plasma
Physics Laboratory; Stanford Linear Accelerator Center; Thomas
Jefferson National Accelerator Facility; and DOE Headquarters (Naval
Reactors Internship).

ELIGIBILITY
Students who are majoring in any branch of science, math,
engineering and technology are encouraged to apply.

To be eligible, applicants: must be currently enrolled as an
undergraduate student and completed at least one semester; must be
eighteen years or older at the start of the program; must be a United
States citizen or permanent resident alien; can participate in a
maximum of two SULI internships; and must have coverage under a health
insurance plan.

If a candidate will graduate before the beginning of the internship
for which he or she is applying, he or she must apply as a graduating
senior.

FUNDING
Housing allowances, transportation, and stipends are offered to
participants at all the laboratories. The stipend is $400 per week.
Round trip costs to come to the lab are provided for students who live
more than fifty miles from the lab (some restrictions apply). A
housing allowance is provided when housing is not directly provided.

Transportation expenses are reimbursed for one round trip between
the applicant's home or academic institution and the facility.
Depending on the laboratory policy, travel will usually be paid only
for students whose permanent address is more than fifty miles away
from the lab. Transportation expenses will be reimbursed on the
basis of the most direct route. Travel by a private automobile will be
reimbursed at the current government rate up to a maximum of $350 or
the cost of the lowest commercial airfare, whichever is lower. Travel
by air will be reimbursed at the cost of the lowest commercial airfare.

An appointment is for ten weeks during the Summer Term (May through
August) or for sixteen weeks during the Fall Term (August through
December) and Spring Term (January through May).

OBJECTIVES:

The sponsor provides an internship program for promisingundergraduate students majoring in engineering, computer science,mathematics, economics, physical sciences, foreign languages, areastudies, business administration, accounting, international relations,finance, logistics, human resources, geography, national securitystudies, military and foreign affairs, political science and graphicdesign. Interns are required to work either a combination of onesemester and one summer internship,, or two ninety-day summer internships.

Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens and be undergraduatestudents enrolled at an accredited academic institution. Applicantsshould have a strong academic record (3.0 GPA or better). Foreignlanguage skills, previous international residency and military experience are pluses.

OBJECTIVES:

During the internships, interns will carry out research supervised by a lab mentor. Specific fields include: cellular parasitology, cellular biology, virology, retrovirology, molecular biology, immunology and biochemistry.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligible applicants are: U.S. citizens; undergraduates who have completed two full years (four semesters) of college course work by the time the internship commences, and have not yet received their undergraduate degree at the time of application. Applicants should have a strong interest in biosciences and biomedical research (prior lab experience is recommended). A knowledge of French or the desire to learn it is advisable.

FUNDING

Interns will receive a living allowance of $400 per week for a total maximum of $4,000. Travel and housing expenses are not paid by the program, but a $300 subsidy is provided and intended to defray the cost of travel and requisite insurance. Depending on availability, affordable housing in a residence may be possible. (emc)
