The Lakers are back!

The athletic program was brought back in response to requests from students who listed athletics as one of their top priorities for the University. In a University-wide survey, students said a sports program would "foster team spirit and pride in attending Roosevelt" and "give students more activities to not only attend but participate in as well."

Roosevelt is reinstating an athletic program that has been dormant for the last 20 years. Intercollegiate competition in various sports date back to 1949 at Roosevelt, but by the 1988-89 academic year only three program's were competing.

The Roosevelt Lakers are back!

Roosevelt University is proud to announce the reinstatement of intercollegiate athletics under the leadership of athletic director Mike Cassidy. The University plans to introduce a minimum of 12 varsity Roosevelt Lakers teams over the next three years, with the first squads competing as early as the fall of 2010.

By reestablishing Roosevelt athletics, the University hopes to further broaden the Roosevelt experience and help the University attract students who would have otherwise studied elsewhere simply so they could continue their athletic careers.

Roosevelt will field 12 teams, serving both men and women, to compete first in the NAIA with long term plans to be recognized as an NCAA Division III program.

As the Roosevelt Lakers’ rekindled athletics program comes together under Cassidy’s guidance, the University will be negotiating indoor and outdoor space and facilities, as well as merging participation across both campuses.
