How much does it cost?

Tutoring is free for currently enrolled Roosevelt students.  Students can utilize a tutor for up to two one-hour sessions per subject per week.

Why should I get tutoring? I’m not failing?

Many students believe that tutoring is something you do only if you are having problems in class.  This is not true.  Tutoring is a way to study and understand concepts in an interactive fashion.  Not only does a tutoring session help your brain process information more effectively, a tutor can also help you identify the areas that you don’t know and assist you in techniques to learn the information.

Don’t wait until there is a problem!  Meet with a tutor or join a study group early in the semester to stay on top of your work and one step ahead of any problems.

What happens during a tutoring session?

Tutors generally let the students lead the session by asking what they would like to work on and using the materials the student has brought.  Tutors usually use this questioning approach to guide the students in their learning.

I’m not sure what my problem is.  How can I explain what I need to a tutor?

Even if you are unsure of your problem, tutors are trained to help you identify your needs.  Problems can vary from a small part of a course to your overall study skills and habits.  The tutor can assist with discovering and helping you solve your academic issues so you can be successful in the future. 

I’m a student at another institution; can I get tutored through Roosevelt’s Academic Success Center?

Tutoring services are available to currently enrolled Roosevelt students only.

Limited tutoring hours are available at the Gage Building. Please contact us by phone if you are interested in tutoring at that location.

What is the best way to prepare for a tutoring session?

Make sure you have all the materials you need to show the tutor what you are working on.  Some of these materials and information you can prepare before you arrive could be:

• description of your assignment/project
• your instructor’s expectations
• your goals for the assignment
• potential strengths and weaknesses you have identified in your writing
• your goals and outcomes for your tutoring session.

What do I do if I can’t make it to a scheduled appointment?

How long is a session?

A tutoring session lasts one hour.  If more assistance is needed, you can make an appointment for another session.

Who can use the tutoring program?

Any student currently enrolled in Roosevelt University can use the tutoring program.

Do I have to make an appointment?

We can accommodate some walk in appointments, but in order to ensure that we have proper tutoring staff on hand to assist you, we ask that you please make an appointment.

Can I get help writing a paper?

The Academic Success Center will not proofread papers or edit work.  The ASC provides tutors who can assist with the entire writing process from the development of content to going through the draft of a paper.

Who are the tutors?

The tutors in the Academic Success Center include currently enrolled students and professional educators in various fields.  They are given training in methods for one-to-one and small group methods of instruction, and all of the sessions within the center are conducted under the supervision of an experienced tutor coordinator.

What training do the tutors have?

Tutors are given specific training in the conducting of small group and individualized instruction by an experienced tutor coordinator who also has several years of experience as a classroom instructor.

What if I can’t make it during the office’s hours?

By scheduling an appointment with a tutor, you can ensure that you will be meeting during a time you are available.

Can my instructor find out if I have been visiting the ASC?

Yes, your professor can find out if you have been visiting the ASC.  If you do not wish for your professor to have this information, please inform the tutor at the time of your visit.
