Alumni Blog Friday, April 7, 2006 Hello, Alumni! The end of a long and busy week here in the Office of Alumni Relations. We've been doing a lot to prepare for Alumni Weekend and are looking forward to seeing everyone at the event! Some news to report: We have received a lot of very positive comments on the website and the blog. We personally want to thank Patrick Lytle and Dev Ghandi for the notes this week. Your comments really help shape the way we serve alumni. Alumni Weekend has not been the subject of the blog lately, so we thought for today that the Blog should have a litte Letterman-inspired note: Top Ten Reasons to Attend Alumni Weekend 2006 10. The Alumni and Faculty Authors Forum: Where else can you find so many authors in one room? 9. Capture the spirit of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt. It’s contagious! 8. The Sports Reception with Edwin Turner…there are photos, and they don’t lie! Did you know Roosevelt students in the past participated in basketball, cricket, tennis, soccer, baseball, golf and badminton? 7. The fabulous chicken at the Alumni Awards and Golden Alumni Luncheon. 6. The free stuff! Who doesn’t need another RU Pencil or keychain? 5. Most of the events are free. Again, the free stuff! 4. The schmoozing with our great alums like you. 3. The Festschrift Dedication….this book is amazing with contributions from alumni Chuck Hamilton, Ira Berkow, Darlene Clark Hine, Paul B. Johnson, and Ambassador Jacques Paul Klein. 2. The only formal speeches will be at the Alumni Awards and Golden Alumni Luncheon. (The event is on a time schedule…they’ll be brief!) And finally… 1. We are asking you to be part of this event which is important in the life of the university. We want you to be part of this spectacular weekend! ________________________________________________________________ Monday, April 3, 2006 Happy Monday! It is a very dismal day in Chicago, with lots of rain and a chill that goes to the bone. Luckily we have have news on a former faculty member and two graduates to report. Read on! Also, we have more information on the Culinary Historians Meeting and Lecture. The speaker is Jim McWilliams who is talking about Colonial food history. Click here and here for more information.
Looking for a job? RU is hiring! Check this link for more information. Have you read the student success stories? Check them out! Alumni Weekend 2006 - just 4 weeks away. Register now! ________________________________________________________________ Wednesday, March 29 We had two wonderful visits from alumni today. Saloni Mahindra, (MBA '03) and Erwin Acox (BA '96; MATD '98) both came to campus and dropped by the Office of Alumni Relations. Thanks so much - it was great to see you both! In the news, we are proud of Nuria Fernandez, (MBA '90) who will be starting a new position with the city of Chicago. Professor Emeritus Bruce Kraig has asked that we share a great opportunity with alumni. For free, too! The Culinary Historians are holding the May 13 meeting at RU. The speaker is Jim McWilliams who is talking about Colonial food history. Click here and here for more information. ________________________________________________________________ Tuesday, March 28 Writing with an open voice in the blog is really exciting to our office. We feel that the opportunity to share "happenings, comings and goings" in this forum brings us to a new level of communications. As usual, Monday was a chaotic day in the office. Filled with meetings, phones, visitors and email, we were non-stop all day long. The highlight was the addition of a new author, Elaine Soloway, (BA '60) being added to the Authors Forum for Alumni Weekend. Just recently published is her book, "The Division Street Princess." We are thrilled to add her name to our list of distinguished authors. Our PR office reported: "Gary K. Wolfe, Roosevelt University professor of humanities and English, has been nominated for a prestigious Hugo Award by the membership of the World Science Fiction Convention for his book Soundings: Reviews 1992-1996. Have you read the Torch lately? A new edition is online at http://www.roosevelttorch.com. That seems to be all for today, until the next time..... ________________________________________________________________ Monday, March 27 Lots of news for the blog today..... We'll skip the small talk and go right into it! And a note for the blog from alumna, Adrienne Kostreva, (MBA '80) "I graduated with an M.B.A in 1980. I always valued the relationships that I made at RU and always appreciated the school. My latest news is that I've started getting involved in another career change. I began with an early career in retailing and moved up the ranks; channeled that into a consultancy for thirteen years in executive search and HR; used that experience and joined a nonprofit where I was Director of HR and in the last two years, have transferred the HR and benefits knowledge to a new business as an insurance agent. I work in the business lines of health, life and accident. It's nice to read about what people are doing and the events at RU. Best to all, from Adrienne Kostreva '80" ________________________________________________________________ Monday, March 20 Happy Monday! Happy first day of Spring! Lots of news to report and things to talk about today. We have so much going on here at RU. In the news...Online today we have articles featuring alumnus Kenneth Kearn, the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University and faculty member Paul Green. Professor Green is mentioned in two articles today. The Los Angeles Times and the New York Times both quote him regarding government elections and issues. RU is also noted in the Northwest Indiana Times. We are also proud to announce the Office of the President/Governmental Affairs will present RU Global - a series of addresses on Important International Issues. The Inaugural Address will take place Thursday, April 6, 2006 at 4:30 p.m. in Ganz Hall. The presenter, Peter G. Kirchschlaegar, Director of the International Human Rights Forum in Lucerne, Switzerland will present, "Nike, The War Against Terror, and Globalization as Challenges for Human Rights Today." Reserve your spot today by calling (312) 341-2322. Photos from the Spring Fling are online. Enjoy! ______________________________________________________________ Monday, March 13 We are thrilled to report that rain, (and a lot of it!) did not deter our young alumni and students from attending the Spring Fling last week. Wowza! We had 100 registered in advance, and thought for sure we'd have a handful at the door, but we never anticipated reaching our capacity of 200! We had to turn people away at the door! Overall it was a huge success. We thank you for attending, and of course for donating to the University. Over $1,000 was raised for student scholarships. Check back to the photos section mid-week for the photos. We have a few other things to announce that are best to use bullets:
________________________________________________________________ Thursday, March 9 First thing this morning we got a call from alumna Sherry Williams (MSIS, '92) from Phoenix, Arizona. Like many of our alums, Sherry is incredible and her energy is boundless. Sherry has survived breast cancer and recently published the book, When Cancer Calls. We hope that she will be able to participate in the Authors Forum for Alumni Weekend. Election season is upon us, and that means Political Science Professor Paul Green is in the news a lot. Click his name to read his comments. The weather is very gloomy today in Chicago. We hope this will not deter our young alums from attending the Spring Fling. We have over 100 reservations for the event and are excited to see who the raffle winners will be. And of course to have our pizza and beer! We are also having our second Arizona event tonight in Tucson. Reservations are steady for this event as well. ________________________________________________________________ Wednesday, March 8 Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort. Wow! What a great quote! It really sums up how we feel about Alumni Weekend 2006. As each event has become confirmed we felt even more inspired for the others. And Alumni Weekend is more than just the office. We had suggestions from alumna Sheridan Jansen (BA, '99), assistance from Professor Julian Peterhas-Kerbis and our colleagues JC Hernandez (BA, '04) and Steven George. Have you received your invitation in the mail? The invite is full of our alums, having a great time, attending our events....where RU in these photos? Recognize anyone in particular? Thank you Erwin, Lehia, Hope, Shena, Emily, Justin, Matthew, Danielle, Celeste, Birdella, Chuck, Bernie, Jerry and Betty! We could really keep going on and on about Alumni Weekend! We'll try and supress our passion for our work and simply remind you to register now. Click the link at left and sign up today. ________________________________________________________________ Tuesday, March 7 Monday was a crazy day around the Office of Alumni Relations. An event packed week means that we get more email, more in-office visitors and tons of phone calls! And we are thrilled to report that all 3 events in Scottsdale, Tucson and Chicago all have great reservation numbers. If you are planning to attend any of these events we know you will have a great time. Or if you are still planning on registering call the office at 312-341-2056. On the RU News Alerts this morning we found articles featuring faculty members: That seems to be it for today! Take care. ________________________________________________________________ Wednesday, March 1 This morning we found many nice comments on the Alumni E-newsletter in our email boxes. It is so wonderful to get feedback from alumni on how we can better serve them. Are you signed up for the e-newsletter? Click here. We had 2 alums and a faculty member sign up for the Alumni Weekend Authors Forum. This is going to be a very exciting event. Check at the Alumni Weekend Authors forum webpage for an up to date listing. The Albert A. Robin Community Advisory Board is proud to host the 13th Annual Golf Outing on Monday, June 13th. For more information, click here. Today is kind of a slow newsday. Looking forward to some excitement later this week. ________________________________________________________________ Tuesday, February 28 Greetings, alumni! Today is the first "blog" message from the Office of Alumni Relations. We felt that the former "News" section really did not fit our needs and have made some minor modifications. We think that you'll still find the same great announcements, and more! We hope that you check back frequently to read our news and announcements. Right now our biggest project that we are working on in the office is Alumni Weekend 2006. Invitations have just hit mailboxes, which means the phone is rining off the hook and reservations are pouring in. What do you think of the invitation? Send us a note with your thoughts. The Office of Career Services is having a career fair. Alumni are invited to participate. Click here for more information. Every day I am emailed with a link where Roosevelt University is mentioned in an article. Here are the links from the last few weeks. Enjoy! |
