Presented to Ira Berkow ’59 In recognition of his professional distinction If there is a newsworthy issue to be uncovered, chances are, Ira Berkow has his finger on the pulse of the story. His pieces in the sports pages transcend conventional sportswriting, while his compelling columns cut to the heart of timely, if not controversial topics, and are injected with rare insight, sensitivity and intelligence. It’s no wonder colleagues and readers alike celebrate Ira’s work, and count on him to deliver a keen, in-depth glimpse into the world of sports, and beyond. For more than 20 years, Ira has been a popular sports columnist and feature writer for the world-renowned New York Times. Loyal readers turn to his articles not only for his unparalleled reporting and sharp wit, but also for his deeper appreciation for the lives of his subjects, as well as his understanding and reference of the larger social context. Ira’s work has also appeared in numerous sports and literary anthologies, and his articles have also been published in magazines such as Esquire, the New York Times Sunday Magazine and Sports Illustrated. Additionally, he is the author of nearly two dozen books, among them his best-sellers Red: A Biography of Red Smith and Maxwell Street: Survival in a Bazaar, as well as his recent memoir, To the Hoop, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. And in 2001, Ira himself made headlines when he shared the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for his article “The Minority Quarterback.” Ira Berkow shares his passion for sports and the human experience with people across this nation everyday. It’s no news that Ira stands out as one of Roosevelt’s most remarkable alumni. And for this, we’d like to share our utmost appreciation. The Harold Washington Professional Achievement Award goes to an alumnus/alumna who has achieved professional distinction |
