Presented to Dr. Theodore L. Gross
Chancellor and Past President,
Roosevelt University

In recognition of his contribution to the advancement of Roosevelt University through unwavering leadership, commitment and vision

During the past 20 years, Theodore Gross has proven himself a true leader in any realm he enters into, and has made unforgettable contributions as a respected academic, active civic leader, prolific author and acclaimed lecturer.
Beginning his career as a teacher and scholar of American literature, Dr. Gross went on to publish fifteen books and numerous articles on literature and education in professional journals, including Roosevelt University: From Vision to Reality, 1945–2002. Also in 1964-65 and 1968-69 he was a Fulbright and Visiting Professor at the University of Nancy, France.

Dr. Gross is also renown for his impactful lectures on multiculturalism, ethnicity and educational reform, gracing academic, cultural and civic organizations across the globe with his knowledge and insight. He has lectured widely in Asia, Europe and Africa, and in 1967 he was a keynote speaker at the Kyoto American Studies Seminar.

Throughout his professional career, universities and institutions across the country have called upon Dr. Gross’ experience and guidance in many administrative posts, honoring him with the titles Dean, Chairman and Provost. And as an active civic leader, Dr. Gross has served on the Boards of numerous organizations, among them as the Founding Chairman of the Chicago Education Alliance, an urban partnership with the public schools.

Dr. Gross has a lifetime of leadership and service accredited to his name. But of all his stellar accomplishments, it’s his everyday dedication to keeping the founding principles and vision of Roosevelt alive that is his most awe-inspiring success. And above all else, it’s for this reason that Roosevelt feels profoundly blessed to have had him as our President from 1988-2002, and as our Chancellor today.

The Theodore L. Gross Leadership Award goes to an individual who has contributed to the advancement of the University and/or the Alumni Association through unwavering leadership, commitment and vision.
