Maintaining a Good GPA
Academic Advising and Assessment

To find out how to raise your GPA you should contact your Academic Advisor to discuss strategies. There may be a few things you can do to raise your grades. For example cut down on your work hours outside of school, take fewer classes, work with a tutor, etc.

  • Try to identify what factors contributed to low grades in the past and what actions you can take to improve the situation.
  • Target courses that you will enjoy taking. This will hopefully lead to A’s and B’s so you can start improving your GPA.
  • Retake classes that you may have failed. The higher grade will replace the lower grade in the calculation of your GPA if retaken at the same institution.
  • Seek help from Professors, tutors, and classmates.
  • Plan your upcoming semesters carefully!

1. How many semester hours have you been taking per semester?

2. Do you feel comfortable with your current schedule? Often students feel that they have to get done by a set deadline. We all have goals, but you should remember not to over burden yourself in meeting those goals. Instead of taking 12 hrs and feeling like you are overwhelmed, consider going part time. Remember it is not necessarily when you finish, but how you finish. Employers will always look at good students first.

  • Think of upcoming trips, work obligations, or other important events in your life.

Try to prepare for the unforeseen. If you know that the semester will be a busy time at work, don’t schedule as many classes.

If you need to, please consider withdrawing from classes. It can help keep your GPA from becoming too low. Be warned however that withdrawing from classes can negatively affect your Financial Aid. When you drop a class please check with your Financial Aid advisor to see if it will affect your aid package.

Also please review the Academic Standing policies of the University.
