Academic Standing Confused about your academic standing? Here is a quick guide through all of the academic standing categories at Roosevelt University. Good Standing To remain in good standing, students must have the following:
If you are classified in this category, you are academically qualified to continue working toward a degree. After completing 72 semester hours of courses, you should request a degree audit, which will specify the remaining degree requirements. Academic Alert Academic Alert applies to students who are in good standing but have at least one of the following:
If you are classified in this category, work with an advisor to develop an academic plan. You will be removed from academic alert when your RU GPA is raised sufficiently or sufficient course work is completed. Sometimes just retaking a course and getting a better grade will raise your GPA enough to remove you from academic alert. Courses repeated at other institutions will not be considered. Admitted on Probation Admitted on probation is determined by the Office of Admission. Please refer to your acceptance letter to determine the terms of your admittance. Typically, if you are admitted on probation, you are expected to:
If you do not meet the above requirements and are dropped due to poor scholarship, you can apply for reinstatement. Typically, students admitted on probation are not considered for reinstatement unless there are extenuating circumstances surrounding their failure to maintain a 2.0 GPA. Special Note: All students on any form of academic probation or reinstatement must develop and file written plans for completing unfinished course work and /or raising their GPA's with an advisor from Academic Advising and Assessment, Project Prime or Learning and Support Services (LSSP). Note that Project Prime is only located on the Chicago Campus. Academic Probation Academic Probation applies to students who meet the following requirements:
If you are classified in this category, you must develop and file written plans for completing unfinished course work and /or raising your GPA with an advisor from the Advising Center, Project Prime or the Learning Support and Services Program. If you are in danger of failing a class or if a class is going to keep you from reaching the desired GPA please withdraw from that class. Academic Suspension Students on academic probation are placed on academic suspension at the end of the term if they have one or more of the following:
Students on academic suspension will be notified of this action on their grade mailers and in letters received from the Academic Status and Progress Committee. If you are placed on academic suspension you can appeal your suspension and petition the committee for reinstatement. Petitioning for Reinstatement Petition of Reinstatement Form (PDF, 23K) A student placed on academic suspension may petition to be reinstated to RU. The procedure is as follows:
Special Note: Calling to schedule an appointment should be done immediately after completing the petition. If you wait to schedule until days before the deadline you will not be guaranteed an appointment. Reinstatement petitions received with no record of meeting with the Office of Counseling will be considered incomplete applications. If you are reinstated, you may be reinstated with special conditions (i.e. limited enrollment of 6 semester hours; ongoing contact with the Advising Center; career or other counseling, or additional course work or tutorials). You may also need to petition for reinstatement of your Financial Aid. If you are granted reinstatement, your academic standing is changed to “reinstated on probation”. Academic Dismissal If the Academic Status and Progress Committee decides that you should not be reinstated for any future term, your status will be changed from academic suspension to academic dismissal. In such cases, you will be notified in writing of your permanent academic dismissal by the chairperson of the committee. If you are academically dismissed, you can have the committee's decision reviewed by the Assistant Vice President for Student Services and the committee chairperson. The Assistant Vice President's decision is final. Academic Contract As a University measure, students on any form of Academic Probation are required to complete an Academic Contract for one semester. Your advisor will review the contract with you and help you develop plans for completing unfinished course work and/or raising your GPA. Contact Academic Advising and Assessment for more information.
