Academic Policies
Academic Advising and Assessment

All students are responsible for knowing and abiding by the rules, regulations, and policies of Roosevelt Univeristy, as stated in the Student Handbook and Undergraduate Catalog. Students are strongly encouraged to seek out assistance from appropriate staff, should you have questions regarding University policies and procedures.

Understanding Academic Standing

Each Roosevelt University undergraduate student has an academic standing determined by his or her Roosevelt cumulative grade point average and unfinished course work. Transfer course work is not included in the RU GPA. Unfinished course work is defined as any grade of I or F.

Good Standing

To remain in good standing, undergraduate students must have the following:

  • Cumulative RU GPA of 2.0 or higher AND
  • Fewer than 12 total semester hours (sh) of unfinished course work

Admitted on Probation

Admitted on probation is determined by the Office of Admission. Please refer to your acceptance letter to determine the terms of your admission. Typically, if you are admitted on probation, you are expected to:

  • Earn a minimum RU GPA of 2.0 by the end of your first semester

Students admitted on probation who do not earn the minimum RU GPA of 2.0 at the end of the first semester will be academically suspended.

Academic Probation

Academic Probation applies to undergraduate students who meet the following conditions:

  • RU GPA is below 2.0 or
  • 12 – 14 sh of unfinished course work

Students on academic probation are limited to 12 sh per term, or fewer if indicated, and must be advised in the Office of Academic Advising and Assessment.

Academic Contract

Students on any form of Academic Probation are required to complete an Academic Contract for the semester. Your advisor will review the contract with you and help you develop plans for completing unfinished course work and/or raising your GPA. Click here for more information about seeking academic assistance.

Ending Academic Probation

In order to end academic probation, continuing students have one term to earn a cumulative RU GPA of 2.0 or higher and reduce incomplete course work to 11 sh or less. Failure to meet these conditions will result in academic suspension.

Continued on Probation

If a continuing student on academic probation does not raise their cumulative RU GPA to 2.0 and reduce incomplete course work to 11 sh or less, but earns a term GPA of 2.2 or higher with 14 sh or less of incomplete course work, their academic status is Continued on Probation.

To raise the cumulative RU GPA, a course initially taken at RU must be retaken at RU. Courses repeated at other colleges do not raise the cumulative RU GPA.

Academic Suspension

Undergraduate students are placed on Academic Suspension for the following reasons:

  • Students admitted on probation who have a cumulative RU GPA less than 2.0 in their first term
  • Students placed or continued on probation who have a cumulative RU GPA less than 2.0 and term GPA below 2.20
  • Students who have 15 sh or more of incomplete course work (grades of I and F).

Students on academic suspension will be notified of this action via letter sent from the Academic Status and Progress Committee. Students may also view their Academic Standing on their semester grade reports on RU ACCESS.

Students academically suspended are not allowed to register for or audit classes, negotiate with professors for grades changes, or make further arrangements to remove incomplete grades unless they are reinstated. In order to return to Roosevelt University, students must apply for reinstatement. A suspended student is not eligible for reinstatement the semester immediately following his/her academic suspension.

Petitioning for Reinstatement

An undergraduate student placed on academic suspension may petition to be reinstated to RU. The procedure is as follows:

  • Complete a Petition for Reinstatement and statement of appeal. Please read the instruction sheet carefully. Return the form and statement of appeal to the Chicago Campus Office of Academic Advising and Assessment Center (AUD 124). No late petitions will be considered.

Submitting an application for reinstatement does not automatically grant a student the opportunity to return to Roosevelt. Applications are evaluated and decided upon by the Academic Status and Progress Committee. The student will be notified in writing via registered mail of the Committee’s decision.

The Committee may decide that a student should not return to Roosevelt for the term for which the petition was received, but feel that the student has the potential for future success. The student is encouraged to petition for a future term after conditions set by the committee are fulfilled. Most often the requirement is the successful completion of designated course work at a city or community college.

If you are reinstated, you may be reinstated with special conditions (i.e. limited enrollment of 6 sh; ongoing contact with the Advising Center; career or other counseling, etc.). You may also need to petition for reinstatement of your Financial Aid. If you are granted reinstatement, your academic standing is changed to Reinstated on Probation.

Academic Dismissal

If the Academic Status and Progress Committee decides that you should not be reinstated for any future term, your status will be changed from academic suspension to academic dismissal. In such cases, you will be notified in writing of your permanent academic dismissal by the chairperson of the committee. If you are academically dismissed, you can have the committee's decision reviewed by the Assistant Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services and the committee chairperson. The Assistant Vice President's decision is final.
