The Theatre Conservatory at Roosevelt University will present Spring Awakening, a Tony Award-winning rock musical that is based on Frank Wedekind’s controversial 19th Century German play, on April 18-21 in the seventh-floor O’Malley Theatre, 425 S. Wabash Ave., Chicago.
Ryan Frostig
Winner of eight Tonys, including Best Musical, Spring Awakening tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality, including the trials and tribulations and exhilaration of the teen years.

Roosevelt senior Ryan Frostig, a Wilton, Conn., native has one of the lead roles in the show, starring as the suicidal teen Moritz. “It’s one of the most serious parts I’ve ever played and it’s been a cathartic experience for me,” said Frostig, who graduated from the Regional Center for the Arts in Trumbull, Conn. in 2009.  The acting major, who recently lost his mother to cancer, said the personal experience helped him relate to Moritz and to portray the dark character’s deep sadness and confusion.

Patrick Rooney (below), a native of Rochester, Mich. and a graduate of the University of Detroit’s Jesuit High School, also stars in the show as Melchior and Katrina Kiss (above), a native of Davie, Fla., and a graduate of the American Heritage School in Plantation, Fla., plays the opposite lead role as Wendla.

“The show tackles a lot of topics that are often taboo in our society, looking at things like sex, suicide, coming of age and homosexuality through a lens of teen angst,” said Kiss.  “It is a demanding kind of a show that requires the actor to reveal who he or she is as a person and as a performer.”

Patrick RooneyPerformances for Spring Awakening will be at  7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday April 18-20 and at  2 p.m. Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21.

With book and lyrics by Stephen Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, the Theatre Conservatory’s Spring Awakening is being directed and choreographed by Luis Perez, associate professor of theatre and director of the conservatory’s musical theatre program.  Music direction is by Roosevelt musical director Bonnie Shadrake.
