COP students and volunteers use mustaches to raise funds on behalf of men's health programs

Posted: 01/10/2013
Students in Roosevelt's College of Pharmacy (COP) recently raised funds for prostate and testicular cancer initiatives through a global mustache-growing campaign known as Movember.

Thirteen male students and COP's Director of Enrollment and Student Services Shaun Keating participated directly in the campus project, which raised $1,374 for the benefit of men’s health programs around the world. (Most are pictured above at the beginning of the campaign clean shaven).Movember 4

However, many more volunteers as well as the Roosevelt community helped make the project in its first year at COP a resounding success (See mustachioed photo at right).

Started in Melbourne, Australia, Movember is a world-wide campaign fundraiser held during the month of November for the benefit of programs like the Prostate Cancer Foundation, LIVESTRONG Foundation, Awareness & Education and Global Action Plan.

In 2011 alone, the initiative engaged more than 850,000 “Mo Bros,” (guys supporting Movember initiatives) and “Mo Sistas,” (women dedicated to the cause).  Together, these volunteers raised more than $126 million in the United States, South Africa, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain.

The COP campaign began on Nov. 1, 2012 with 14 men from the college starting out clean shaven (most are pictured at top). For 30 days, these participants grew and trimmed their mustaches, posing for photos that documented their progress.

Prizes were given in categories including: The Best Mustache (Anthony Albiani and Yasser Rasheed); Funniest Mustache (Jipal Shah); Lamest Mustache (Bruce O. Young); Best-Kept Mustache (Ishan Shah); as well as awards for best Mo Sista (Milisava Zecevic) and best Mo Bro (Gregory Kozeny).

Donation boxes were strategically placed around the Schaumburg Campus and a number of Movember activities were held including: Guess How Many Blue M&Ms® are in the jar;  Mustache Crosswords; Make Your Own Mustache; Match the Mo to the Bro; and the sale of Mustache cookies.

While it was only the first Movember fundraiser put on by volunteers from Roosevelt’s COP, they managed to raise more than 10 times their original goal of $100!
