New Schaumburg Institute for Literacy Enrichment to offer K-8 reading courses

Posted: 01/03/2014
Roosevelt University is starting a Saturday reading enrichment series in January at the Schaumburg Campus that will provide more opportunities for children in kindergarten through eighth grade to obtain the skills they need to excel in reading and writing.

The new Schaumburg Institute for Literacy Enrichment, which is an expansion of the University’s highly successful Summer Reading Clinic, will offer eight-week courses beginning on Jan. 25 in:  Accelerated Literacy, which is for gifted kindergarten through sixth grade students who have demonstrated above-average performance levels in reading and writing; Literacy Enhancement, which will offer individualized support to  kindergarten through eighth grade youths who are average or are struggling in reading and writing; and Digital Literacy, which will teach third through fifth graders how to use literacy skills with computer programming/technology.

“We’ve learned that being in school isn’t always enough for our kids to actually achieve the goal of their going to college and building successful careers,” said Thomas Philion, interim dean of Roosevelt’s College of Education. “This program will enable kids to expand their creative and critical thinking in reading and writing so they can excel in both college and career.”

The Schaumburg Institute for Literacy Enrichment will be led by Becky McTague, associate professor of language and literacy at Roosevelt. Recent graduates of the University’s innovative and award-winning literacy program will be working one-on-one as coaches with the children who are enrolled in the program.

“We will be taking a balanced approach to literacy and our goal will be to provide opportunities for reading and writing that are both fun and instructive,” said McTague.

All three courses will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays at Roosevelt’s Schaumburg Campus, 1400 Roosevelt Boulevard, Schaumburg.

K-8 children from throughout the Chicagoland area are eligible, but space is limited.
