French exchange student does research on cure for cataracts at College of Pharmacy

A pharmacy student from Paris, France, was the first exchange student for Roosevelt University’s College of Pharmacy (COP), studying over the summer with Professor Moji Christianah Adeyeye.

Pierre Destruel, a student at Descartes University in Paris, contacted Adeyeye, chair of biopharmaceutical sciences, early this year seeking internship opportunitities. He spent two months over the summer at Roosevelt’s Schaumburg Campus as a research exchange student under Adeyeye’s supervision. He worked on a project entitled “Development and characterization of In-situ gel ophthalmic delivery system using polymer blend.”

The project involved research into a potential new cure for cataracts.

“I learned a lot about research and I got to work very closely with some of COP’s  professors.  It was a great experience for me,” said Destruel, who recently returned to France to begin his fourth year of pharmacy school.

During the exchange, Destruel was mentored by Adeyeye, professor of pharmaceutics and drug product evaluation, Ravikiran Panakanti, assistant professor of pharmaceutics, and Amusa Adebayo, associate professor of biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics. They provided Destruel with tips on doing literature, the role that polymers have in drug delivery, acceptable criteria for an in-situ ophthalmic delivery system and experimental design.  In the process, the exchange student also learned characterization techniques such as determination of osmolality, clarity and rheological properties of the delivery system.

COP professors in the Department of Biopharmaceutical Sciences recently began in May doing a wide range of research projects in the College’s new laboratories.  During this time, the new college in July also welcomed its second class of students.

“To have an exchange student like this so early attracted to our program is quite significant,” said Adeyeye. “It shows that we are on the right track with our program and with important research opportunities.”
