Region's first ABA-approved Bachelor of Arts in Paralegal Studies degree program to be offered

Posted: 04/12/2012
Roosevelt University’s Paralegal Studies Program, approved by the American Bar Association since 1976, will expand its offerings, introducing a Bachelor of Arts in Paralegal Studies degree program beginning in the fall.

The new four-year, 120 credit-hour program, combining liberal arts and general education courses with law-related specialty classes, is designed for those who wish to pursue a career as a paralegal as well as for those who may be interested in attending law school.

“Our new program will offer the only ABA-approved BA in Paralegal Studies degree in the Chicago area,” said Carrie Lausen, director of the University’s Paralegal Studies Program.

“Anyone interested in a career in the legal profession who is looking to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree would be an ideal candidate for the program,” said Lausen. “Students will benefit from practical, hands-on legal training and will be taught by experienced legal professionals.”

Those studying for the BA in Paralegal Studies will take courses in the arts and sciences as well as specialty courses in paralegal studies, including Ethics and Professionalism, Legal Research, Civil Law, Legal Writing, Pre-Trial Litigation, Commercial Law, Trial & Post-Trial Litigation, Legal Technology, electives and an internship. In addition, for students 24 years of age and older, Roosevelt is offering a fast-track program where students can earn a Bachelor of Professional Studies degree with a major in Paralegal Studies.

Roosevelt’s Paralegal Studies Program also will continue to offer its long-established post-baccalaureate certificate for students who already have bachelor’s degrees. The certificate program can be completed in as little as 18 weeks for full-time students and in about a year for part-time students.
