Grace Before Dying: Photo exhibit on terminally ill in prison hospice opens March 8 at Gage

Posted: 02/21/2012
Intimate documentary photos capturing last emotions and final moments of life for terminally ill prison inmates in a hospice program at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, La., will be exhibited at Roosevelt University’s Gage Gallery, 18 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, from March 8 through April 28.

"Grace Before Dying," a new photo exhibit by award-winning documentary photographer Lori Waselchuk, explores the relationship between volunteer prison inmates who choose to work in the Louisiana penitentiary’s hospice program and the terminally ill inmates who die there. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held at 5 p.m. March 8 at Gage.

The author of the book Grace Before Dying, Waselchuk is a documentary photographer whose work has appeared in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and LIFE. The winner of the 2007 Photo NOLA Review Prize and the 2004 Southern African Gender and Media Award, she has taken photos on behalf of many not-for-profit organizations around the world including CARE, the UN Worldfood Program and the Vaccine Fund.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. For information, visit www.roosevelt.edu/gagegallery. For media inquiries, call Laura Janota, 312-341-3511.
