Sustainability Initiatives

"The nation that destroys its soil destroys itself."

"We defend and we build a way of life, not for America alone, but for all mankind."
- Franklin D. Roosevelt

Since the beginning, Roosevelt University has been inspired by President Roosevelt’s understanding that a healthy and sustainable environment is fundamental to social equity.

One of today’s most pressing concerns threatens the poorest nations: global climate change. Through flooding, drought and eventual famine, governments become unstable and unable to care for their poorest citizens. A vicious cycle of poverty, war and disease result.

Roosevelt recognizes and acts on its responsibility to do what it can to reduce this global cycle of climate destabilization, which includes environmental stewardship.

Over the last four years, the University has implemented energy reductions, waste management, sustainable land use practices and local food—as well as educate the community on actions needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the inevitable changes we all face.

Continuing this commitment this year, Roosevelt will draft a campus-wide Strategic Sustainability Plan, featuring energy, emissions, land stewardship and water use which will be implemented and updated every year. It will expand and enhance efforts actively reducing emissions and protecting the environment.
