Highlights of the Institute
- 25th Annual Summer Reading Clinic
- Balanced Literacy Workshops for Teachers: Six Friday morning workshops will show teachers how to integrate balanced literacy strategies into classroom instruction.
- Graduate Courses for Certified Teachers: Four graduate courses will help teachers to achieve new levels of expertise in the teaching of language and literacy including clinical practicum with permission of the program coordinator.
The Summer Reading Clinic
The Summer Reading Clinic is the highlight of the institute. The clinic is for K-12 students, and is designed to enhance reading and writing skills essential for learning. Enrollment is limited to 35 children. The teachers/coaches are certified teachers completing a Master’s Degree in Reading. The clinic meets from June 4-July 5, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., Mon.-Thurs. Students are instructed in small groups of no more than 10 students. The cost for the Reading Clinic is $475.00 per child.

Balanced Literacy Workshops for Teachers
The priority registration deadline is June 1, 2012. All workshops provide CPDUs to participating teachers. Workshops meet at the Schaumburg campus on Fridays, from 9 – 11:30 a.m. The cost is X for 1 workshop, Y for all five workshops. After June 1, regular and walk in registration is X for 1 workshop, Y for all 5.

Graduate Courses for Certified Teachers
All courses are 3 credit hours. Enroll as a student-at-large, and pay $795 per credit hour. Apply for and earn admission to the MA program in Reading with an admission GPA of 3.0 or higher and pay only $645 per credit hour. All courses apply toward an MA degree in Reading.

- READ 463, Teaching Language and Literacy in the Content Areas
- Study online from May 14-August 3rd or study on-campus from July 2 – August 9, Tues. & Thurs., 6-9:10 p.m.
- READ 434, Literature for Children and Adolescents
- Pre-session, June 29, 6-8:30 p.m., class meets from July 16-20, 9-5 p.m.
With the permission of the program coordinator, teachers admitted to the MA program in Reading may enroll in an intensive summer practicum designed to enhance skills in the teaching of reading, writing, language, and literacy.
