Test Preparation Resources

There are multiple resources available for preparing for the Illinois Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP).  The TAP Study Guide provides information on the content covered by the test in the areas of Reading Comprehension, Language Arts, Mathematics, and Writing.  The study guide is a great starting point for preparing for the test.

The Basic Skills Diagnostic Practice Test is a free interactive computer program that contains a full-length practice test form for the old Basic Skills Test, including questions for the Reading Comprehension, Language Arts, and Mathematics subareas of the test.  In addition, a constructed-response writing assignment and sample responses to the writing assignment are provided to assist in the preparation for the Writing subarea.  The program also includes a tutorial providing instructions on how to use and navigate through the practice test, and scoring of and correct answer explanations for the multiple-choice questions.  In general, the Basic Skills Diagnostic Practice Test provides solid preparation for the new TAP.

More current, and fee-based practice tests for the TAP are available through the ICTS website. An expanded study guide is also available for purchase.

At Roosevelt University, the Academic Success Center (ASC) and the Writing Center provide group and individualized academic support and tutoring across a wide spectrum of subject areas, including the Basic Skills Test. Tutoring is free for currently enrolled Roosevelt students.

Many commercial test preparation publishers have developed study guides for the Illinois Basic Skills Test and the Test of Academic Proficiency.  These study guides may be found at conventional or online bookstores. Many students have found ACT Study Guides helpful in preparing for the test, too.

You also might consider seeking assistance from a former teacher, friend or acquaintance with exceptionally strong skills in the given area in which you need help. Some test preparation companies provide tutoring that may be of assistance in preparing for the Test of Academic Proficiency.
