Reading Concentration

Students enrolled in the MA in Teaching and Learning Program may obtain deeper knowledge about the teaching of reading through enrollment in an 18 credit hour concentration that is online and face-to-face at the Schaumburg campus.  A reading teacher endorsement may be earned through the completion of this concentration, if the required state exam and practicum in reading (READ 470) also are completed.

The following six courses (18 credit hours) are required to earn the concentration. All courses offered in the Summer are face-to-face; courses offered in the fall and spring are online.

  1. READ 432, Strategies and Materials for Teaching Reading, Writing, and Language (Summer)
  2. READ 434, Literature for Children and Adolescents (Summer)
  3. READ 435, Holistic Approaches to Literacy and Learning Disabilities (Spring)
  4. READ 436, Foundations of Reading and Language Instruction (Fall)
  5. READ 437, Principles and Practices in Language and Literacy Assessment (Spring)
  6. READ 463, Teaching Language and Literacy in the Content Areas (Fall)
