Middle School Education

Students enrolled in the MA in Teaching and Learning Program may obtain deeper knowledge about middle school education through enrollment in an 18 credit hour concentration.  A middle school endorsement may be earned through the completion of all or part of this concentration. 

The following two courses (6 credit hours) are required to earn the concentration.

  1.  EDUC 411, Adolescent Development
  2. EDUC 413, Foundations of Middle School

Consult the middle school endorsement master schedule to see when EDUC 411 and EDUC 413 are offered.

Nine (9) credit hours (3 courses) may be chosen in consultation with the advisor below.  Students may select the sequence below, or may choose courses from the Bilingual/ESL Concentration or areas typically taught in middle school settings. 

  1. READ 439, Young Adult Literature (Online, Spring)
  2. READ 463, Teaching Language and Literacy in the Content Areas (Online, Fall)
  3. ENG 467, Composition Theory (Online, Fall)

The capstone course for this concentration is TLED 480, Inquiry in the Classroom.  It is offered online during the summer semester.
