Summer Reading Clinic

2014 Summer Reading Clinic June 16 - July 17

Roosevelt University's Language and Literacy Summer Reading Clinic  is designed to improve the reading skills of students in grades K-12.  Enrollment is limited to forty-five (45) applicants. The teachers/coaches are graduate students completing their practicum courses for a Master's Degree in Reading, and a student-teacher ratio of 5:1 is the target for the clinic.

Your child will be immersed in literacy experiences that include the following:

  • story telling
  • read alouds
  • guided reading
  • drama
  • independent reading and writing
  • group discussions
  • book projects
  • presentations
  • research
  • computer applications
  • strategic teaching
  • guest speakers
  • author studies
  • integrated art/music/drama field trips
  • book club

Finally, an emphasis on strategies to help children prepare for standardized testing situations will also be implemented.  For example, how to manage 35 minutes in order to read a passage, answer multiple-choice questions and write a response.

Students are guided by Roosevelt University graduate students in small group settings and one-on-one instruction.  Teachers select appropriate activities and materials to meet each individual student's needs. Whether your child is struggling with word recognition, comprehension, or is excelling in reading and wants to be challenged, the teachers will design a plan to fit him or her.

The cost for the Reading Clinic will be $500.00.  A deposit of $200 is required to secure registration.
