European music before 1750. The Middle Ages: Gregorian chant; secular monophonic song; the rise and development of Medieval polyphony. The Renaissance: the development of sacred and secular polyphony by Franco-Flemish composers; the spread of Renaissance polyphony, especially to Italy and England; the rise of instrumental music. The Baroque: the origins of Baroque style and the birth of opera in Italy; vocal and instrumental music in Italy, Germany, France and England.
