In this seminar we will explore the music, texts, historical context, and legacy of the songs that Robert Schumann composed based on poems by four of the most celebrated poets in the romantic movement: Eichendorff, Heine, Goethe, and Rückert. The primary goal of the course is to enhance our understanding and appreciation of these works from a variety of analytical, practical, and contextual perspectives. Class meetings will be discussions led by students and the instructor, based on regular reading, listening, and score-study assignments.
