MAS 439 GRAD SEM:CHAMBER MUSIC LIT
An exploration of vocal chamber music from the early nineteenth century to recent times, viewed as a hybrid genre that expands the intimacy and intensity of the solo art song with the complex textures and varied tone colors of chamber music. Close study of works by Argento, Berg, Carter, Crumb, Boulez, Falla, Harbison, Poulenc, Ravel, Schnittke, Schoenberg, Schubert, Stravinsky, and others, with particular attention paid to timbre and dynamics as major elements of expression. Counts as a course in Music Since 1900.
