Music Degree Programs

Bachelor of Music (BM)

The Bachelor of Music is a four-year professional degree program (differing from a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, which is more general). The Bachelor of Music program is oriented toward development of a high level of musical achievement in a specialized area. Around 75% (90 hours) of the degree study involves music coursework: lessons, ensembles, musicianship and music history, along with specialized courses in each major area. In these courses, students acquire the knowledge and skills that will form the foundation for work in the professional music world. Because it is important for musicians to make connections between music and other fields of study, students also take about 30 hours in areas such as English composition, foreign language, visual arts, history, or psychology.

The Bachelor of Musical Arts degree is an individualized, interdisciplinary program for students who want to combine overall competency in music with a specialty in an outside field. About 50% of this degree involves lessons, ensembles, and other music studies, and the remainder encompasses a broad array of disciplines in the humanities, social science, and science, along with an emphasis in a separate area such as literature, international studies, or theatre.

Students who wish to enter CCPA as undergraduates are expected to demonstrate significant talent and ability in their performing area, along with basic musicianship skills (being able to read, write and identify key signatures, scales, chords, and rhythms); to have had several years of ensemble experience; and to exhibit a strong sense of commitment to their chosen profession.
