The professors in Roosevelt's University's MPA program prepared me for the rapidly changing health career environment in which I work and in which I plan to make a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable people where their heal and access to care is concerned. International Studies

Manuel Talavera

Manuel Talavera III

BA in International Studies, May 2013

Currently I am enrolled at the University of Illinois, Springfield pursuing a Master of Arts in Public Administration and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management. I firmly believe if one is to change the very fabric of government one must do so from the inside while simultaneously portraying diligence and adhering to ethical principles. Roosevelt University (Political Science Department) taught me to become resilient in my principles while remaining open to diverse ideas. I will utilize Roosevelt’s concept of Social Justice as a catalyst for societal transformation. RU Ready?

My experience at Roosevelt University has been fundamental not only in shaping who I am today, but also has shaped the way in which I think. The vast number of courses available in the Political Science/International Relations Department at RU gave me a multi-disciplined education that combined policy, theory, anthropology, sociology and economics into a single major. The excellent guidance provided by the faculty, including the administration, helped me take this diverse education and formulate an interest and passion within my own discipline. I can confidently say that RU has provided me with the skill set necessary to succeed in my current career.

Political Science

BA in Political Science and Journalism, May 2013

I was initially drawn to Roosevelt University because of the university's focus on social justice education. I always saw a close connection between political science and social justice, so attending Roosevelt felt like the right decision to me – and it was.

I gained a keen understanding and fascination of the relationship between politics and media at Roosevelt. That propelled me to seek my master’s degree in journalism and a career in political reporting.

Roosevelt's political science program offers a great diversity of courses, from theoretical to practical and everything in between. My professors were excellent and very passionate about their courses. On top of that, the university is located in the heart of Chicago’s Loop, which is just about the best place to be if you are a political science junkie like myself!

Roosevelt's diverse and social justice-oriented Political Science Department provided me with the insight, motivation and determination to move forward in a career working on political campaigns that has led me to work for the Governor. Roosevelt's downtown Chicago location and well-connected faculty provides students with great opportunities to work in the field and gain valuable experience before graduation, giving them a leg up in a very competitive job market. Finally, Roosevelt's social justice mission has guided my career path with the goal of electing candidates that provide positive change across Illinois.
