English Composition Program
Roosevelt University’s Composition Program, together with the Writing Center, is the foundation of the university’s writing community. Writing instruction at Roosevelt has long been a central part of the university's mission, and the work of the composition program is grounded in principles of social justice. These principles guide our curriculum, our pedagogical choices, and our interactions with each other. In addition to empowering our students through advanced literacy, we also strive to engage them with the personal, social and political implications of writing. We believe the learning outcomes below reflect these mission-related goals. We expect students who complete our courses to have competency in these areas; however, because writing is a process, we also expect that our students’ development as writers will not end with successful completion of their composition requirements. Instead, we intend these competencies to be a foundation on which students will continue to build an academic, professional and personal writing practice.
Students in our program should acquire competency in the following learning outcomes:
- Understanding writing and research as a process of critical inquiry, revision and collaboration
- Appreciating how genre and rhetorical situation shape reading and writing in academic and other communities
- Writing clear and organized prose with a distinct voice
- Being empowered to use writing as a tool for social justice
- Analyzing college-level texts and responding thoughtfully and persuasively
- Understanding the motives and methods that drive academic researchers and academic disciplinarity
Because advanced literacy is a powerful tool for economic and social equality, writing instruction at Roosevelt is a central part of the university's General Education mission. The English Composition Program is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences and administered by the Department of Literature and Languages.
