Fall 2011 Roosevelt's Walter E. Heller College of Business initiated its first Incubator Businesses with the goal of furthering our commitment to entrepreneurship and sustainable business. Our first incubator businesses have now moved on and we have expanded the number and locations (now in both Schaumburg and Chicago).

Heller Incubator Business HandsOn Suburban Chicago

HandsOn Suburban Chicago (HOSC), founded in 1969, has a mission to “inspire, equip and mobilize people to volunteer and take action that builds vibrant and prosperous communities”. HOSC primarily recruits and places volunteers with nonprofits in need of help and trains nonprofit staff in volunteer and nonprofit management. This provides over 200 local nonprofits and schools with critical capacity building support for strengthening and sustaining their programs. HOSC's service area includes 45 towns and villages in the north and northwest suburbs of Chicago, reaching a population of over 1.6 million.

HOSC serves the community by:

  • Recruiting volunteers for nonprofit staff through the HandsOn Connect online volunteer matching database, community classes, a periodic newspaper column in the Daily Herald, and HOSC's website, which has an average of over 400 volunteer opportunities posted each week 
  • Connecting volunteers with over 200 nonprofits and schools in need of help through the targeted recruitment of youth, adults, seniors, and corporate employees. HOSC is the largest volunteer center in Illinois and over 8,000 volunteer referrals are made on average each year
  • Training nonprofit staff through the provision of professional development workshops, Strategic Volunteer Management Training Series (SVMTS) certificate courses, a nonprofit technical assistance program, and the distribution of an e-newsletter which discusses local trends and strategies in volunteer management 
  • Directing its own service initiatives to address unmet needs in the Chicago suburbs. This includes SAVE Consulting, which helps agency and school leaders define and recruit for skills-based and pro-bono volunteer needs; the Community Paint-A-Thon, which benefits low-income seniors and disabled persons; and the Homeland Security Program, to train volunteers to act in case of an emergency
  • Recognizing volunteers and volunteer managers through recognition events to celebrate their accomplishments


Heller Business Incubator InnovatechInnovatech IT Service Solutions LLC, is a minority certified, information technology consulting firm. We provide a full-suite of technology services that range from simple hardware repair to custom designed IT departments that integrate PC, data backup, mobile devices, camera security, and Voice over IP communication systems to uniquely meet our client’s needs. In addition to writing custom programs for our clients, we constantly have new ideas in process that will be marketed to the general public. Thus, Innovatech actively seeks to attract Roosevelt University students to join in and share our excitement.

Internship and Career Consulting (ICC) connects companies with emerging professionals through valuable internship experiences. ICC has fostered relationships with a wide range of universities giving us the competitive edge to provide instant access to diverse interns from many different backgrounds. ICC has strong relationships with local universities such as: DePaul, Loyola, Northwestern, etc. ICC has also recruited from Yale, Stanford, Cornell, and other nation-wide and international academic organizations.

Internship and Career Consulting’s (ICC) mission is to strategically place pre-qualified interns with companies that provide the opportunity to expand their skill sets and experience for rewarding employment. Internship and Career Consulting (ICC) has the track record of selecting and coaching diverse interns that add value to a company and in turn gain real career experience. Our interns are recruited from universities of great standard, some of which are Ivy League; and are selected and placed through our RISME (recruiting, interviewing, selecting, managing and evaluating) approach. When combined with our intern mentoring, coaching, and grooming techniques, it creates a win-win situation for both the company and the intern.

Linked Local Network

Fred McMurray of Linked Local NetworkThe mission of Linked Local Network (LLN) is to provide a digital platform where an online community connects via social media networks to the local office community resulting in a better global community.

LLN helps businesses build and maintain their digital dominance using various tools such as: Google Photos, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, website design, Social Media Marketing, Blogging, and most importantly through using their communities, as it through community teamwork building that global collaboration happens.

According to the June, 2011 Google/IPSOS survey, 58% of business with fewer than 250 employees don’t have a website and yet over the next three years, businesses that make use of the web expect to grow 40% faster than those that don't. Source: BCG Report, "The Connected World: The $4.2 Trillion Opportunity," March 2012. LLN’s research has shown that small business owners find websites too expensive to build and too cumbersome to maintain. The small business owner doesn’t have the manpower or the resources to have someone else maintain the website, so they opt out. Usually their alternative is to run an ad or just list their location information.

LLN has developed an easy solution to what has been a major dilemma, the LLN Signature page. Not only does the LLN Signature page give your business location and contact information, it is your opportunity to tell your story. Following your Signature Page launch, you can write columns (blogs) about your business events and attach that information to your Signature Page. It is as easy as me writing this weekly column.
